A Sweet Historical Romance with "Persuasion" Vibes--"A Love Once Lost" by Jennie Goutet—Review

 

My Review:

"A Love Once Lost" by Jennie Goutet is the first book in “The Bridwells’ Grand Tour” series. This is such a sweet historical romance with "Persuasion" vibes. This delightful second-chance romance features older and more mature main characters, wonderful writing, and unique historical details. I love that the heroine and her family are going on their own Grand Tour, and their first stop (and the location of this book) is the resort town of Spa, Belgium. It was neat to learn more about the resort town of Spa and the Georgian era. I love that the author writes about a unique period and location that you do not often see in historical fiction (18th century European life). There were also some nods to Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility.”  It was fascinating to read about the history of Spa, especially the rituals surrounding bathing and drinking of mineral waters. The love story was so precious and filled with yearning. The characters are good and noble. This is such a wonderful and clean historical romance. I am so excited to read the next book in this series that I highly recommend!

Content: I give this a low PG rating and would consider this a clean read. Some examples of the content: mention of gambling; mention of infidelity.

Another Winner by Joanna Barker!--"A Love Most Daring" by Joanna Barker--Review

 Review:

"A Love Most Daring" by Joanna Barker is another winner! Ms. Barker continues to show me why she is one of my favorite authors. Her witty writing and humor shine throughout this sweet story. It is the third book in the “Bow Street” series but can be read as a standalone. It features a gruff Scot as the MMC which I love. Who doesn’t love a grumpy Scottish teddy bear?! You do get to see characters from previous books, which I absolutely loved! The mystery kept me turning the pages and the sweet romance won me over. I loved our main characters Beatrice and Alexander; they were so perfect for one another and their slow burn romance was swoony! The forced proximity during a murder investigation was done so well. This may be my favorite of Joanna’s books. I highly recommend this sweet Regency romance!

Content: I give this book a low PG rating. Some examples of the content: characters drink alcohol; characters want to get their fortunes told; a character stumbles upon a couple in a romantic embrace, possibly having s*x; rumors of drunkenness and illegitimate children: mention of an asylum.

A Unique, Gothic Retelling--"Heart of Snow" by Rachel Grow Law—Review

 

 My Review:

“Heart of Snow" by Rachel Grow Law is a fresh, Gothic Snow White retelling! Rachel Grow Law may be a debut author, but you would never know it from reading her amazing story. I will tell you right now that this is one of my top reads of the year! It was everything I wanted in a retelling and the romance was perfection. Ms. Grow Law managed to make several nods to the original fairy tale while making this book uniquely her own. I love this time period of 1500s Germany during the Reformation and appreciate that the author wove so much history into the story. I learned so many new things while reading this story. Ms. Grow Law gives great attention to historical details and the book was well researched. This is great for fans of retellings and romance with Gothic undertones. Margaretha and Friedrich are such great characters. Theirs is an enemies-to-lovers romance. There are lessons on flirting, love, archery, and French between the two. Will these enemies catch real feelings along the way? Margaretha is kind and willing to do whatever it takes to help her brother, even to her own detriment. Will she make the right choices when lives are at stake?  

This book is so romantic, there is amazing chemistry and banter, and the first kiss was perfection. Ms. Grow Law made my jaw drop during a certain part, which I totally did not see coming! There is a scene in the rain and a letter that gave me “Pride and Prejudice” vibes. I love the themes on forgiveness throughout the story. I cannot say enough good things about “Heart of Snow.”  Ms. Grow Law does not shy away from some harder topics, so be sure to read the content and trigger warnings (she manages them so well and they never felt too much to me). I am a huge fan and cannot wait for her next book! I want to read everything she writes. This is perfect for fans of swoony historical romances, retellings with Gothic undertones and those who want that happy sigh when they finish the last page!

Content: I give this a PG-13 rating, due to certain themes. A Clever Retelling that Will Take You Back to Oz--"The Unraveling of Emlyn DuLaine" by Lindsay Franklin—Review

   My Review:

"The Unraveling of Emlyn DuLaine" by Lindsay Franklin is a unique portal fantasy story that is a mash up of many beloved fairy tales and stories! It will leave you wanting more and remind you of the power of story.  It is especially perfect for any fans who want to jump back into the land of Oz after seeing “Wicked,” as there are several references to “The Wizard of Oz” and characters in this book even spend part of the story in that mysterious land.  

Emlyn, the main character, is a lovable, sarcastic girl who is dealing with the grief of losing her sister and wants to find out what happened to her. Emlyn loves stories and imagination and finds herself trapped in a world of stories. The world of Rivenlea is so creative. I love that there is a magical library that holds all the stories that have ever been written.  It was so fun to notice all the pop culture and story nods and references as I was reading. Emlyn makes friends who become like family and learns to better use her powers. There is a great message that stories help us better see reality, and they hold, shape, and instruct us. I especially love Frank the Wyvern. The end left me dying for the sequel! Readers, writers, and storytellers will love this unique fantasy!

Content: I give this book a PG rating. Examples of the content: people think the main girl has gone crazy (but she really has not); mental health discussions; the main character is dealing with the grief of losing a sister, possibly has PTSD and flashbacks; a character curses, but the words are not actually written.

A Charming Romance with a Perfect Gentleman! --"The Gentleman's Confession" by Anneka Walker--Review

 My Review:

"The Gentleman's Confession" by Anneka Walker is such a charming romance! I had a smile on my face as I read this wonderful story. Readers will fall in love with this friends-to-lovers romance and even more so with our hero, Miles Jackson.  Jemma Fielding feels she needs to marry to honor her late grandmother’s dying wish and goes to the Matchmaking Mamas Society. Jemma is matched with someone but feels she does not know anything about love. Jemma decides to go to her old friend Miles for advice. Miles is one of the best male protagonists I have read in a long time. He is such a sweet cinnamon roll. The way he loves Jemma, even when his feelings are not returned, is so romantic. He is willing to teach Jemma about love so she can fall in love with and marry someone else, even though he secretly loves her. He is nicknamed “Mr. Romantic” for a reason! There is even a lake scene with a wet shirt! It is very reminiscent of the infamous lake scene from the Colin Firth “Pride and Prejudice” movie! Be prepared with your smelling salts!

Jemma, our headstrong, lovable heroine is a bluestocking and loves fashion. She also loves to support causes. Miles and Jemma have a group of friends called “The Rebels,” many of whom readers will recognize from previous books. You need not have read the previous books to enjoy this one, but I look forward to reading all the rest of the books in the series! The friendship between the Rebels is so fun and heartwarming. It is admirable how they come together for worthy causes and to fight injustice. There are also lots of historical tidbits in the story including cricket, fashion, and the Chios massacre of 1822. The author writes in a witty way and there are several humorous scenes that I enjoyed.

The author calls this book “romantic, witty and uplifting!”  It surely is all those things, and it is also a clean read. I highly recommend this book!

Content: I give this book a G rating. Examples of the content: the word “devil” is used; there is a rumor that someone was drunk; it says that someone almost uttered a swear word; there’s mention of a woman showing too much of her chest.

My Review

"So True a Love" by Joanna Barker is an incredible Regency romantic suspense novel! This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it will certainly not be my last. This book hooked me from the first page and held me in suspense as I devoured and savored its contents. Ms. Barker’s writing is superb and keeps one invested in the story. I also love her use of humor throughout. The characters feel like real people, and I was so sad that I had to part with Verity and Nathaniel when I closed the last page. Readers will fall in love with Verity with her cleverness and stubborn streak. Her character reminds me of “Enola Holmes.”  Nathaniel is just a sweetheart, and readers will fall for this Bow Street Runner nicknamed “Sir Chivalry.”  This love story is one of rivals-to-lovers that is done so perfectly. The chemistry between the main characters sizzles off the page. I enjoyed their lively, witty banter. I must not forget their first swoony kiss! The side characters are all so well written and memorable as well. I am glad there is a story about Verity’s brother, Jack. Wily is another favorite. I appreciate that "So True a Love" highlights familial love, especially the love and sacrifices a mother makes for her daughter. I have been looking for more clean, well-written Regency books and I know I have found a winner!

A Charming Regency Cinderella Retelling! --"The Lady Glass" by Anneka Walker--Review

“The Lady Glass" by Anneka Walker is such a sweet Regency romance! If you know me, you know I love a good retelling. This one absolutely delivers! The author does an excellent job of incorporating the elements of the original “Cinderella” fairy tale into the story in a non-magical way. Ms. Walker gives fun nods to the fairy tale, while also making it a unique story of her own. The love story between the main characters is perfection. I could feel the chemistry and sparks fly between the them every time they met. I love their interactions and banter. There is even a moment similar to Darcy’s hand flex from the 2005 “Pride and Prejudice” movie. Swoon!!  Rolland, our male protagonist, is a good representation of a character dealing with chronic pain. Rolland is a little gruff on the exterior, due to his previous experience as a naval captain, with a heart of gold. Theresia is spunky, brave, and stubborn. Will Rolland and Theresia be able to each achieve their goals together by solving the murder mystery and finding Theresia’s missing glass vase? These two have a bit of an enemies-to-lovers story, which is a trope many readers love! This story is not just a romance, but also a murder mystery, ripe with spies and intrigue! I enjoyed learning more about female violinists of the time, the Congress of Vienna, and the Czech glassblowers. Ms. Walker even incorporates a bit of faith content into the story, which I always love to see. Although “The Lady Glass” is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. Ms. Walker gives a quick summary of who characters are from other books, so you will not be confused if you only read this book or start here. I want to now go back and read the rest of the books in this series. Fans of “Bridgerton” will love this romance without having to be worried about explicit content.

It is clean as far as the romance.  Some examples of the content are: a person wants to keep from being seen as a “light skirt”; there’s mention of the prejudice of the English against the Roma people during this time period; some characters go to a fortune teller; there is talk of a woman being mistaken for someone’s mistress; someone curses, but the words aren’t actually spoken; someone was drunk in the past.
