A Sweet Romance with Nods to Austen! --"A Mismatch Made in London" by Melanie Dickerson--Review

 

My Review:

"A Mismatch Made in London" by Melanie Dickerson is a sweet romance with nods to Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” and “Northanger Abbey.” This story is gentle, sweet, and full of a slow-burn romance that you will be rooting for! Ms. Dickerson’s stories always have such great and moral characters who pray and talk to God. Amelia Moore, our heroine, goes to London for the social season and meets Jeremy Beaumont (the man all the women want to marry, due to his status and wealth). There is a great enemies-to-lovers and a grumpy-sunshine dynamic between the two. Facing pride and prejudice, will Jeremy and Amelia’s relationship prevail? Or will Amelia fall for the other men who have caught her eye? Amelia realizes that feeling needed makes her feel loved and it is hard for her to feel loved by Jeremy because he does not need her. Characters deal with forgiveness and realize that everyone is responsible for his own thoughts, feelings, and happiness. I thought this was such a sweet story and lovers of Regency romance will enjoy Ms. Dickerson’s latest book!

A Fantastic New Favorite Historical with Steampunk Vibes! —"A Lady's Handbook to Gadgets and Guile" by Angela Bell—Review

 

My Review:

“A Lady's Handbook to Gadgets and Guile" by Angela Bell is a fantastic new favorite historical fiction book with whimsical steampunk vibes! This was just incredible! The author says this book is like “Little Women” meets “Inspector Gadget.”  This is the first in the “Daughters of Genius Society” series and has some connections to the author’s previous book, “A Lady’s Guide to Marvels and Misadventure.” “The Daughters of Genius Society" is a women’s club of books, tea, and blue stockings on the outside—concealing an elite team of lady inspectors. Our heroine, Margaret Kingsley, is an ambulatory wheelchair user who is also a gadget inventor for the D.O.G.S. I have never seen the experience of chronic pain/illness described so true to life. Living with chronic illness and pain myself, I almost seemed at times to be reading my own experience on the page and have never felt so seen in a book. I highlighted so many parts and was encouraged in my own pain and faith journey. I also loved that the FMC is older than is typical in this genre. There is also mental health representation, awesome family relationships, and adorable animal companions. I love how the author shows the beauty of God, and His comfort and sustaining grace. The faith content is awesome. The main character prays, leans on the Lord and gives thanks in hardships. The story and action are amazing, with an invention gone out of control and a daring chase that ensues. Our hero deals with panic attacks and loves music. I love how he worshipped God with his music. The romance was ever so sweet! I cannot wait for the next book in the series! Do yourself a favor and read this inspiring, fun, and whimsical story! You will not be disappointed.

A New Favorite Mystery! --"The Inklings Detective Agency" by John R. Kelly—Review

 My Review: “The Inklings Detective Agency" by John R. Kelly is a new favorite mystery of mine and worthy of the literary greats that inhabit its pages! I could tell just from the first few chapters that this book was a winner. The incredible writing pulled me in, along with the awesome characters (many beloved literary legends) and its premise. The author obviously knows his stuff and would make any die-hard Inklings fan proud with this book (I am a huge Tolkien nerd myself and loved the many literary quotes and Easter eggs). The story is rich with history and some great settings, from the Kilns to the Bodleian library, Oxford, London, and Scotland. I love that other literary figures also make cameos—Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dorothy Sayers, and Agatha Christie. I think this book will be loved equally by men and women (I must hide it from my husband). The actual mystery is exciting and kept me on my toes. The author’s notes at the end were fascinating and a lot are based on historical people and events, including a detective club with Agatha Christie, Sayers, and Chesterton. The mystery itself does involve some darker aspects, including the occult (see content notes below), but it never got too dark for me, and it is all told from a Christian perspective. I love that Lewis prays with one of the people he interviews when the person gets emotional. There is a great theme of the light shining through the darkness. Now I feel like the Inklings are lovable friends. Please, please let there be many more mysteries for the Inklings to solve! I am so excited to read about their next case and to see if their “Moriarty” will show up again. All the stars!

A Dazzling Regency! --"The Light of Stars" by Jenelle Hovde—Review

 My Review: 

"The Light of Stars" by Jenelle Hovde is a dazzling new Regency romance! I had high expectations for this book, and it did not disappoint! I love our main characters Kitty and Sebastian. There is great banter and intellectual sparring between the two. Kitty loves studying stars and astronomy. I love that Sebastian is supportive of Kitty’s bluestocking endeavors. Kitty wonders why God allows things to happen and must trust in God to chart her path, like she charts the stars. Kitty learns that God arranges our paths no matter how much others try to control them. The faith content is amazing in this book with lots of Scripture and you can tell the characters live out their faith. I love the India storyline (especially when they travel to India) and the astronomy aspect. There are so many great historical details and I appreciated the references to real life characters like William Wilberforce and William Carey. It was fun picking up on references to Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” There are some great scenes with Sebastian and fencing that will have the ladies swooning! Another scene I loved is when Kitty takes Sebastian to a bluestocking salon. Will Kitty and Sebastian fall in love as they question the British Empire’s rule and influence over India and the ideas of reform? Will they be able to see God’s handiwork in their lives and circumstances? I highly recommend this Regency romance to lovers of history and swoon-worthy romance!

Such a Sweet Story! --"The Good Fortune of Miss Robbins" by Melanie Dickerson—Review

 My Review:

"The Good Fortune of Miss Robbins" by Melanie Dickerson is such a sweet Regency romance! It is perfect for fans of no-spice romance and lovers of Christian fiction. I love that it has some nods to “Jane Eyre” and “Pride and Prejudice.”  Charlotte Robbins is a wonderfully written character who becomes a governess for the Earl of Brookhaven's siblings. Soon, sparks start to fly between the Earl and the governess. They cannot be together because of their difference in class. But Charlotte’s mysterious fortune that she inherits could change that. The story is easy to read, gentle and sweet. I always love the faith content in Ms. Dickerson’s books, and I appreciated the great written descriptions. Miss Robbins is a wonderful protagonist—she is truthful, just, kind, good and courageous. While Ms. Dickerson’s fairytale retellings are still my favorite of her works, this was a wonderful story. I recommend it to lovers of sweet Regency romance!

A Lovely Revolutionary War Romance--"The Belle of Chatham" by Laura Frantz—Review

 My Review: "The Belle of Chatham" by Laura Frantz is a lovely Revolutionary War historical romance by one of my favorite authors! It certainly lived up to my expectations! This was such a perfect story for the 250^th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It takes place in war-torn early America and features a family with divided loyalties. Ms. Frantz infuses her story with rich history and impeccable research. The romance between Mae and Rhys is sweet and filled with yearning and longing. It is gentle, with a slow burn. I also love that this book shows us what a disagreement between a married couple looks like and the struggles a married couple might face during this period. Throughout their journeys, Mae and Rhys face heartaches and setbacks. Mae goes on her own harrowing journey of escape and Rhys goes off to war. Will they make it back to one another safely amid dangers, betrayal, spies, and war? The faith content in "The Belle of Chatham" is wonderful! The characters grow in their faith and learn that they are not in control of their lives or the outcome. I love the message about praying without ceasing. The ending had me sighing with contentment and feeling joy for the characters. I highly recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction!

A Wonderful Gilded Age Retelling! --"To Love a Lady" by Gabrielle Meyer—Review

 

My Review:

"To Love a Lady" by Gabrielle Meyer is a wonderful Gilded Age retelling of “My Fair Lady.”  It is the first book in the “Dollar Princess” series. I am such a fan of this author and was so excited to hear about this new series based on different musicals and based in the Gilded Age. I loved all the nods to “My Fair Lady”—from different scenes, to the outfits the characters in the story wear—yet “To Love a Lady” also has its own unique twist. Clara, our heroine, thought God made a mistake when she was born and that no one wanted her. Alexander Paxton-Hill is the perfect hero and perfect for Clara (but not everyone thinks so). As Clara is taken out of the slums and whisked into high society and trained to be a lady, she may just fall in love with the wrong person. Clara learns that God does not make mistakes and God created her with intention and purpose. I loved the great faith content, especially about prayer and a relationship with God. It was so neat to briefly see some familiar characters from “Through Each Tomorrow” (from Gabrielle’s “Timeless” series). I cannot wait to read more of this series! Fans of historical fiction, stories with faith and heart, and fans of “The Gilded Age” television series will adore this book!

An Epic Sequel! --The Restitching of Camille DuLaine by Lindsay A. Franklin—Review

 My Review:  The Restitching of Camille DuLaine by Lindsay A. Franklin is the epic conclusion to The Rivenlea Sphere duology! While I loved the first book in the series, this one blew me away! These are the kind of books you need to read to fully understand the awesome and intricate plot and world. The Restitching of Camille DuLaine is a book for book lovers with so many references and visits to beloved stories (The Little Mermaid, The Secret Garden, Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz, and Anne of Green Gables to name a few). I love how from the first page the reader is thrown back into the story with lots of action and a fast-paced plot that is hard to put down. While the first book was mostly told from one point of view, I loved getting many more perspectives in this story. I love all the characters who become like family. I especially love Emlyn, her sarcasm with her ADHD representation, and Frank the wyvern. In an interview, Ms. Franklin described the story as being about sisterhood, magical libraries, the power of fiction, and the search for belonging, and I could not agree more. The book has short chapters and engaging storylines with a cute romance. There was a huge jaw-dropping moment halfway through that I did not see coming! Our characters learn that when we grow, it can be hard to let go of our old identities. We need to remember what is true about us now. I do not want to say too much more to spoil anything. This was such a wonderful fantasy book and series, and it is bittersweet thinking there will not be any new books in this world. So, if you can’t already tell, I highly recommend it!

A Sweet, Lush Historical Novella! --"A Fierce Devotion” by Laura Frantz—Review

 

My Review:

"A Fierce Devotion” by Laura Frantz is a sweet, lush historical novella. It is a companion novella to Ms. Frantz’s “The Seamstress of Acadie,” but can easily be read as a standalone. Bleu Galant was a minor character in that novel and now gets his own story in "A Fierce Devotion.”  Laura’s prose is so lush and descriptive. I was immediately drawn into this world and fell in love with the wonderful characters and their story. I appreciate the attention to historical details. I love that the characters pray and that so much faith content was incorporated into the story. The love story between Bleu and Brielle was so tender. Bleu’s heart towards Brielle and Titus was really inspiring and beautiful. Brielle, our heroine, learns about faith and dwelling on the good. It was neat to follow these characters on their journey, starting in Virgina and ending all the way across the ocean. It was also interesting to learn more about the mid-1700s following the French and Indian War and the Acadian refugees. I highly recommend this book to lovers of Christian historical fiction!

A Wonderful Regency Romance with Gothic Vibes--"No Stone Unturned" by Jenelle Hovde—Review

 My Review:

"No Stone Unturned" by Jenelle Hovde is a wonderful Regency romance with Gothic vibes and great faith content! I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet and beautifully written story. Fans of Mimi Matthews, Julie Klassen, and “Jane Eyre” will especially love this book. I loved the descriptions of the untamed, isolated Abbey, the ancestral home of our hero, Captain Rafe Hawthorn. Miss Bridget Littleton, our loveable heroine, is delightful and I love that she is a bluestocking interested in artifacts. The romance was wonderful, and the book was well researched and rich with historical detail. I appreciated the faith content and the message that God is in control, even when we doubt and it is only by His strength that we can do anything. There are also themes of forgiveness, friendship, and loyalty. I think lovers of Regency romance with Gothic vibes will love this book! I cannot wait to see what this author writes next!

An All-Time Favorite! --"Waterfall" by Lisa Bergren--Review

 

My Review:

“Waterfall” is the first book in the bestselling “River of Time”series by Lisa Bergren. I read this series when it first released in 2011 and since then it has been an all-time favorite series! Ms. Bergren is now releasing new editions of this series. Reading this new edition felt like coming home. Upon my reread of “Waterfall,” I loved it just as much, if not more, as I did the first time around. This time-travel book is an exciting and breath-taking adventure that sweeps the reader away to medieval Italy! Ms. Bergren wanted to write a book with the romance of “Twilight” and the action of “The Hunger Games” and she achieved just that. It is perfect for teens and adults alike. The reader gets to be inside our heroine Gabi’s head as she and her sister find a portal through some tombs to medieval Italy and meet hot knights and get caught up in battles between opposing forces. I love the way we hear Gabi’s thoughts and Ms. Bergren does an excellent job writing from a teenage girl’s point of view. The story is addictive and easy to read. It really feels like you are in medieval times and the author obviously did her historical research. Readers will love Gabi’s brave and strong character (the girl rappels down a castle wall and is not afraid to pick up a sword) and is in danger of losing her heart to the handsome knight, Marcello. I love the side characters (whom you will see more of as the series continues [Team Greco!]) Ms. Bergren writes amazing action sequences, and I was never bored. I also love how she adds subtle faith themes, which she expands upon as the series continues. Now I need to reread the rest of the series. The books just get better as the series goes on. I highly recommend this book and series!

A Fast-Paced Roman Standalone! --"Rogue Secreto" by Victoria McCombs—Review

 My Review:

“Rogue Secreto” by Victoria McCombs is a fast-paced, young adult fantasy standalone with ancient Roman vibes. It is easy to read and hard to put down. I especially loved the illustrations. Our morally gray heroine, Marsella, can see others’ secrets with one glance. She also wants to find someone who loves her when they know who she truly is. Marsella disguises herself as the Rogue Secreto and is hired by the emperor to steal people’s secrets (the emperor also happens to be her father). But where will she draw the line? Accompanying the intrigue, there is a great romance that I was rooting for. I love that the author kept me guessing on a certain character and whether they were good or bad.

This is a multi-layered story with subtle Christian themes. It has themes of power and secrets, and makes the reader question how much power one person should hold. It deals with how we judge and perceive people. Marsella learns that we need to factor in mercy and grace. She can steal their secrets, but can she see their morals or their intentions? Through Marsella’s (the Rogue Secreto’s) story, we see that evil is a slippery slope. There are also beautiful depictions of sacrifice and love. I highly recommend this story to fans of young adult fantasy!

A Spectacular Conclusion to an Epic Series! --"Fathoms” by Lisa Bergren—Review

 My Review:

“Fathoms” by Lisa Bergren is the third book in the “Oceans of Time” series, which is an adult spin-off from the beloved “River of Time" series. I eagerly read the original “River of Time” books when they first released in 2011 and was so excited to finally have some Christian young adult fiction that was just as good as any secular fiction of the time.  Since then, I have read every book in both series. I am sad that this beloved series is ending, but I was so glad that the final book lived up to my expectations for a series finale (it went beyond my expectations)! As I read “Fathoms,” it felt like coming home to read about this world and these characters. It was neat to see familiar characters, especially from the “River of Time” series as well. The book is gritty, heartfelt, and realistic with wonderful faith content! 

In the beginning of “Fathoms,” Luciana is struggling with losing her sight and realizing her value is found in who she is, not in what she does. She is debating whether she should risk going through the tombs again to be healed but is not sure of where or when in time the tombs will take her on the return trip. I loved watching Luciana learn to adapt to living a life without her sight and how she learns ways to still fight and be a girlboss (or “She-wolf”). The characters of the book face immense joy and great hardships. I loved the beautiful faith content, which had me in tears and encouraged me in my own faith. There are lessons on family, love, and choosing to risk loving on a deeper level. The characters learn that God puts us in certain moments, places, and times for a purpose. They must learn to welcome peace, regardless of the circumstances. I do not want to say too much about the plot since it is the third book in a series, and I do not want to spoil anything. I will say there’s non-stop, pulse-pounding action and it was hard to put down. The romances were beautiful, as were the family relationships. I am so sad to say goodbye to these characters, but I am glad I can always re-read all the books. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book and series! I cannot wait to see what Ms. Bergren writes next!

"Truth Cursed" by Angie Dickinson is a fun story full of mystery and adventure! If you like books with boarding schools, spies, swords and ball gowns, this book is for you! The story reminded me a bit of “Ella Enchanted” and is perfect for middle grade and early young adult readers (although I also thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult). Cressida Hoth, our main character, is forced to always tell the truth, through a curse that her evil aunts inflict upon her. Later her aunts drop her off at a boarding school that is secretly a rebel spy ring. How can Cressida be a spy when she is forced to tell the truth? Will that prove a danger to herself and others? Is telling the truth a curse? I love how Angie Dickinson explores the power of truth through Cressida’s story. In fact, n an interview, Ms. Dickinson revealed that the idea for Cressida’s truth curse stemmed from her own social anxiety. 

I love the settings and descriptions in this story. Of course, there is a lot of exciting swordplay and intrigue, which had me on the edge of my seat. I did not guess a big reveal at the end, which left me gasping! I also appreciated the themes of true worth, honor and responsibility. There is a sweet romance between Cressida and another character (he is such a cinnamon roll). I really hope Ms. Dickinson writes more books in this world. I highly recommend this fun and creative story full of intrigue, spies and ballgowns.

Angie Dickinson is a lifelong lover of magical stories that point to truth, hope, and redemption. A few years ago, while I was pregnant with my third child and feeling an itch to write a story, a question popped into my mind. Could I write a relatable main character who is cursed with a peculiar impediment that affects every relationship and interaction? What would that look like and how challenging would it be? This was the beginning of my journey toward creating and learning to know and love Cressida, the main character of Truth Cursed.

This book became an ode to so many of my favorite things: girlhood friendships, mystery, fantasy, ballgowns, hidden weaponry (poisons! blades!!), court intrigue, an epic castle setting, sweet romance, and coming-of-age character growth that is anything but graceful. In many ways this story is old fashioned for this fast-moving publishing world, embracing an amalgam of the story types that I grew up reading and wishing to read.

As I wrote, I discovered my reader, and she was younger me. So I wrote for her, for my own future teens, and for every reader who loves to fall into a cozy, wholesome, and intriguing story. I’ve attempted to present my reader with a mirror and true hope as they unravel the mystery and adventure of Truth Cursed. I will forever be thankful to my Creator for the opportunity to share Cressida’s story.

An Enchanting Story with Fairy Tale and "Beauty and the Beast" Vibes--"Embergold" by Rachelle Nelson—Review

 My Review:

"Embergold" by Rachelle Nelson is a new favorite! Ms. Nelson weaves an enchanting story for young adults that has fairy tale and “Beauty and the Beast” vibes, while remaining its own unique story. I loved that it felt like I was reading a classic fairy tale or folk tale. From the incredible writing to the amazing world building, "Embergold" kept me glued to the page from start to finish. The world has castles and dragons and is Germanic in nature. Readers will love our heroine, Gilde, and her strength, persistence, loyalty, grit, and determination (despite the odds being stacked against her). Gilde is very relatable as she deals with anxiety, panic attacks, and health issues. I also loved the dragon and the character Wil. The romantic relationship in the story was super sweet and almost had me in tears several times. When Gilde meets the dragon, she begins to question everything she thought she knew and learns to think for herself. Ms. Nelson explores some deep themes such as what is truth, what is the true story, what is good, and what is evil. “Embergold” celebrates stories and why they matter. I loved the allegory and beautiful faith message. At times, I really did not know how things would end with certain characters. This is an exceptional story for young adults (and the young at heart) and lovers of fairy tales full of heart!

A Gripping and Heartfelt Story! --"Midnight on the Scottish Shore" by Sarah Sundin—Review

My Review:

“Midnight on the Scottish Shore” by Sarah Sundin is a gripping, heartfelt story that I will not soon forget! It is a novel about World War II featuring Scotland, lighthouses, the Double Agent program, and memorable characters. I was immediately drawn to the Scottish setting and the beautiful cover with the lighthouse. The setting did not disappoint, as I felt like I traveled to the windswept, rugged coast of the Orkney Islands and walked and bicycled with the characters across the lonely, haunting moors. I loved learning about the rich Scottish traditions. I now want to visit the Orkney Islands myself!

Our main male character, Lachlan Mackenzie, wears a kilt, has an accent, plays the bagpipes overlooking the sea, dances traditional Scottish dances, and recites poetry! What is not to love? Lachlan also is noble, honorable and wants to do the right thing. When faced with having to purposefully sabotage his own naval base to help the Double Cross program, what will he do?

Cilla van der Zee is a smart, lovable, whipper-snapper of a heroine who brings joy to Lachlan’s life. Through a series of events, she becomes a spy in the Double Cross program. I learned so much about MI5’s Double Cross program and loved reading about spies, double agents, and sabotage. The book was not too heavy or sad like some World War II books can be. The novel was obviously well researched and contained so much wonderful history as well as an emotionally moving story. There are wonderful lessons of duty versus mercy, forgiveness, family, finding freedom inside and outside of the trap and the truth that sets us free. Faith is also woven wonderfully into the story! This has been one of my favorite books of the year so far and I highly recommend it!

A Beautiful Love Story! --"The Indigo Heiress" by Laura Frantz--Review

 My Review:

"The Indigo Heiress" by Laura Frantz is a lovely historical romance that takes place in 1774. It is set partly in Virginia and the second half of the book takes place in Scotland (which I love to read about). Ms. Frantz always pens novels that are full of fascinating history and expertly woven prose. This book is well researched, and I learned so many new things while being completely engrossed in the story. The love story is a slow burn that will leave readers swooning, especially over the gruff, Scottish lead character, Leith. Leith also has twins who are just adorable! There is a scene that takes place at the ruins of a Scottish castle and is so romantic! It is one I won’t easily forget. The main characters also read and recite poetry to one another! Many readers will love our heroine, Juliet Catesby. I appreciated that she struggled with chronic migraines, and I loved her relationship with her sister. She has a strong faith and prays often. Juliet and her sister help slaves escape and help those less fortunate, no matter what side of the ocean they find themselves on. The faith threads in this story were beautiful! The settings of Virigina and Scotland are so well done. I could especially feel myself in the rainy streets of Scotland and hear the Scottish accents. This book is a must read for fans of clean Scottish romance and historical fiction!

A Creative Christian Fantasy! --"Darkfell" by Amanda Wright—Review

 My Review:

"Darkfell" by Amanda Wright is a creative and unique Christian fantasy! It is reminiscent of classic fantasy stories and allegories like “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Chronicles of Narnia.” Ms. Wright’s writing is filled with vivid descriptions and she excels at world building. The characters are wonderful and ones you will find yourself rooting for. I love the classic good versus evil storyline. There is a lot of action and the brotherly relationship between two of the main characters is heartwarming. Thom Darkfell, mapmaker and lover of libraries, finds himself thrown into the adventure of a lifetime and receives powers he did not ask for. Readers will enjoy traveling with Thom and his friends as they journey through different realms to help save the world. Along the way readers meet star people and dragon people.  Will Thom be able to bind the dark realm? I want to give a word of caution that this book is more violent and dark and there is spiritual warfare throughout. Please be sure to read the content warning below. I commend this author for her creative story, and I love that this is another great option for teenage boys!

I Loved This Next Installment to a Beloved Series! --"The Seaside Homecoming" by Julie Klassen—Review

 

  My Review:

"The Seaside Homecoming" by Julie Klassen is the third book in the “On Devonshire Shores” series. Julie Klassen has long been a favorite author of mine and I’ve devoured all her books.  This series is such a lovely series, and this newest installment did not disappoint. I loved finally getting to meet Claire, the fallen sister, and reading her beautiful story. Claire’s story is that of a prodigal daughter. She made a mistake and had to live in exile with her great-aunt in Scotland. Claire eventually makes her way home to Sidmouth. Will her family accept her back into the fold and break their oath to her dying father? Claire must learn to make her own way as a partner in a boarding house. The proprietor, Mr. Hammond, is a handsome and mysterious man (who has an adorable daughter). Will Claire be able to trust Mr. Hammond? I loved seeing the feelings develop between the two.  We also meet characters from other books in the series and see how they are doing. There is one character who still has a romance thread throughout the story that is not tied up at the end of this book. I am so glad there is going to be another installment, because I am dying to know how her love story plays out. “The Seaside Homecoming” is a tender story of family, love, forgiveness, second chances, reconciliation, and faith. I fell in love with new characters and loved how Ms. Klassen wove Indian culture into the story. The side characters are always superb in Ms. Klassen’s books. This whole series is very reminiscent of “Little Women,” and also gives a nod to “Pride and Prejudice.”  I would recommend you read the series in order, as each story is a continuation and builds on itself. I highly recommend this series!
