An Action-Packed Retelling Filled with Greek Mythology! --"A Curse of Gold" by Annie Sullivan—Review

My Review

"A Curse of Gold" by Annie Sullivan is the second book in the “A Touch of Gold” duology.  It can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading the first in the series to fully enjoy this entry.  “A Touch of Gold,” the first book in the series, is a “King Midas” retelling.  Kora, our heroine, is King Midas’s daughter.  She has been touched by King Midas and cursed.  Her skin is gold and she has secret powers.

In “A Curse of Gold” Kora seeks to break the curse once and for all.  Her people do not trust her to become their ruler and Dionysus (the one who cursed her father) is now trying to kill her and overthrow the kingdom.

This book is full of adventure as the characters embark on this dangerous quest to stop Dionysus and break the curse once and for all.  I enjoyed seeing the old gang from the first book back together.  Ms. Sullivan does an amazing job building her characters.  The side characters are well done, and they are some of my favorites.  I love the friendship theme running throughout.  Although this is a quest story, there is still a lot of focus on characterization and character growth.

There is also so much adventure and action!  There are oracles, quests, sea monsters, gods, and a myriad of other creatures from Greek mythology.  Through it all, Kora learns what it takes to be a good ruler and leader, she protects and fights for her people and puts her people above herself.  The conclusion is nonstop adventure and action!   If you pick up “A Curse of Gold,” buckle your seatbelts for a wild ride!

Content:  This is a clean read.  The only content is a reference to a man being drunk and a woman is naked after being released from a curse.

Rating:  I give this book 4 stars.

I want to thank Annie Sullivan, Blink and NetGalley for the complimentary copy of this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I express in this review are my own. This is in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s CFR 16, Part 255.

From Annie Sullivan, author of A Touch of Gold, comes Tiger Queen, a sweeping YA fantasy adventure that tells the story of a fierce desert princess battling to save her kingdom. Fans of Rebel of the Sands and Meagan Spooner will devour this retelling of Frank Stockton’s famous short story, “The Lady, or the Tiger?”

In the mythical desert kingdom of Achra, an ancient law forces sixteen-year-old Princess Kateri to fight in the arena to prove her right to rule. For Kateri, winning also means fulfilling a promise to her late mother that she would protect her people, who are struggling through windstorms and drought. The situation is worsened by the gang of Desert Boys that frequently raids the city wells, forcing the king to ration what little water is left. The punishment for stealing water is a choice between two doors: behind one lies freedom, and behind the other is a tiger.

But when Kateri’s final opponent is announced, she knows she cannot win. In desperation, she turns to the desert and the one person she never thought she’d side with. What Kateri discovers twists her world—and her heart—upside down. Her future is now behind two doors—only she’s not sure which holds the key to keeping her kingdom and which releases the tiger.

MY REVIEW

This story captivated me from the first page!  “Tiger Queen” by Annie Sullivan has an “Aladdin” feel to it, with a “Mulan-like” heroine; yet it manages to be its own unique, amazing story!

Ms. Sullivan’s book is a retelling of a short story by Frank Stockton called “The Lady or the Tiger?”  In “Tiger Queen,” Princess Kateri realizes that there’s a whole new world outside of her palace; one where it’s not all about her. And the things she thought she knew and believed are challenged.  She finds that sometimes being the strongest isn’t about physical strength or control.  Instead, being kind and forgiving, caring for the people and being their voice are where true strength lies.  She learns that she needs others in order to succeed herself.  There are so many wonderful lessons this story imparts as Kateri grows and matures throughout the book, often with the help of the infamous Desert Boys.  But will she have learned enough to fight her biggest battle and win?  Will she be able to become the Queen her kingdom needs?

“Tiger Queen” is definitely one of my favorite reads of the year so far and I cannot recommend it enough!

Content: This is a clean read with a PG rating for descriptions of battle and violence.

Rating: I give this book all the stars!  5 stars!

Blink Summer Reading Tour--"A Touch of Gold" by Annie Sullivan (Review) & GIVEAWAY!

A Touch of Gold by Annie Sullivan
Publisher: BLINK
Release Date: August 14, 2018
Genres: Young Adult Fiction -- Mythology, Retelling

SYNOPSIS:
King Midas once had the ability to turn all he touched into gold. But after his gift—or curse—almost killed his daughter, Midas relinquished The Touch forever. Ten years later, Princess Kora still bears the consequences of her father’s wish: her skin shines golden, rumors follow her everywhere she goes, and she harbors secret powers that are getting harder to hide.

Kora spends her days locked in the palace, concealed behind gloves and veils, trying to ignore the stares and gossip of courtiers. It isn’t until a charming young duke arrives that Kora realizes there may be someone out there who doesn’t fear her or her curse. But their courtship is disrupted when a thief steals precious items from the kingdom, leaving the treasury depleted and King Midas vulnerable. Thanks to her unique ability to sense gold, Kora is the only one who can track the thief down. As she sails off on her quest, Kora learns that not everything is what it seems—not thieves, not pirates, and not even curses. She quickly discovers that gold—and the power it brings—is more dangerous than she’d ever believed.

Midas learned his lesson at a price. What will Kora’s journey cost?

MY REVIEW:

Okay, so this book is amazing!  This may be one of my favorite review books of the year thus far.  "A Touch of Gold" by Annie Sullivan is a delicious, rip-roaring retelling of the King Midas tale.  This is a fast-paced adventure with so many wonderful lessons and themes woven seamlessly into the plot.

The main character, Princess Kora (King Midas’s daughter) experiences so much character growth over the course of the novel.  She sets out to save her father, but along the way, she finds herself.  Cue the song, “This is me” from The Greatest Showman (and if you haven’t seen that movie, who are you and what are you doing with your life?)!  Kora has to learn to be comfortable with who she is and not hide herself.  She starts to really live life and stops hiding, even though she is different.  What a great reminder that our past, disabilities or differences should not hold us back from living life to the fullest and loving ourselves in the process!

The story itself is fantastic.  It reminds me a bit of “Pirates of the Caribbean” mashed up with a gender bender retelling.  I love all the mythology in the story and the world Ms. Sullivan creates.  Ms. Sullivan often ends chapters with cliff hangers, making the reader not want to put the book down.  And the twists in the plot are genius!

This is such a wonderful, encouraging and fun read!  I would recommend it to teens and adults alike.  I must give you fair warning that you might just lose sleep over this book!

Content:  This is a clean read, especially for being a young adult novel.  I give it a PG rating.  Some examples of the content are: mention of alcohol; a person is accused of being a demon; a man kills himself; headless bodies; gore related to pirate lore; women showing skin, implying they are prostitutes.

Rating: I give this book 5 stars (or 5 touches of gold)!
