My Review

"The Nightmare Virus" by Nadine Brandes is a young adult sci-fantasy dystopian novel with some impressive spiritual themes! I have read all of Nadine’s books and this one reminded me the most of her “Out of Time” trilogy. It has more of a dystopian, darker feel than some of her more recent books. Nadine always produces such unique, multi-layered stories that pack a spiritual punch. There is a lot of allegory, but the allegory is not obnoxious or in your face, so it can easily be enjoyed just for the great fiction story it tells. I could read it again and I am sure I would catch aspects and layers that I did not catch on this first read through. I love that the main character is a male (we need more of that in Christian fiction) and that it is great for boys, with non-stop action and just a little romance. The plot is gripping, and action packed, and I often could not find a stopping place.

The story is “Hunger Games” meets “Gladiator” meets “Inception” meets “Ready Player One.”  I loved the nods to “Harry Potter,” “Lord of the Rings” and other fandoms throughout the story. Nadine includes great themes such as asking, “Where is the light in the darkness?” and encourages readers to examine how they are using their time. “The Nightmare Virus” encouraged me in my Christian walk and had me thinking about it throughout the day.

God most speaks to me through story, so I loved that this was a great, engaging story packed with Biblical truths (although they never take you out of or distract from the main story)! I have a feeling many of my fellow book nerds will feel the same way about this one!

I give this story a PG to PG-13 rating. Some examples of the content are: someone’s dad cheated on his mom; a character’s family member dealt with depression; a man curses, but the words are not actually written; someone possibly committed suicide; there is blood, violence, death, and battle scenes.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Nadine Brandes, Enclave Publishing and Celebrate Lit and was under no obligation to post a review.

More from Nadine

“Really, God? Now?” That was my reaction when He told me it was time to sign a contract for The Nightmare Virus less than two years after a global pandemic. “No one wants a book with the word “virus” in its title.”

That was the first of many moments that revealed this book was not my choice to write or publish or even title, but was instead the Lord’s. I’d had the idea for over a decade. And while it had nothing to do with the 2020 pandemic it arose from the concept that this world is not our home. This world is temporary and yet, during our time in it, we—as Believers—know the path to freedom out of darkness.

It was a story I was waiting and waiting to write and share with the world and yet when God said “Go” I argued with Him. I was convinced this was the worst time to try and publish this book. I told Him I’d have no time to write it (as a mama of 3 children in 3 years with another one on the way at the time.) Yet God said, “I’ll make the time.” And He did. He paved the way for this book—both in my imagination and in my practical life—and that’s the best road an author can walk, one where her King has gone before her.

This book is unlike anything I’ve ever written and I know that can be either a very good thing or a very bad thing, haha. But God has made it evident that He has a purpose for this story, not the least of which was to draw me closer to Him while writing it.

As I prepared this blog post I thought I could talk about the characters or themes or plot…but you’ll encounter all of those things when you read it. Instead I chose to share the heart journey behind it. Readers may pick it up because of the title or perhaps they’ll pick it up in spite of the title. No matter how the story finds its way into their hands, I know that it is the Lord who got it there. And I can’t wait to see what sort of sparks come from it.

Blood, Bullets, Royals and Intrigue!--"Romanov" by Nadine Brandes--Review

My Review:

This isn’t your typical Disney princess story–it’s even better!  “Romanov” by Nadine Brandes breathes life and magic into a tragic period of history (the period of the Romanov’s captivity).  Just like the matryoshka doll in the story, this tale has many layers.  It’s beautiful, heart breaking, magical and inspiring.

This beautiful tale of the time the Romanovs spent in captivity is based on historical facts, but Ms. Brandes infuses it with her own flair; and of course, some magic!  It is full of Russian culture, which I loved learning about.  There are so many inspiring themes such as friendship, family, forgiveness and purpose.

The Romanov family has such a strong bond with one another and they seek to be kind and show forgiveness to their captors (which is based on fact).  The story is not all flowers and bunny rabbits.  It’s a very hard time for Anastasia “Nastya” Romanov and her family.  What I love is that these characters laugh, play jokes, pray together (and maybe even experience romance).  Anastasia is a good picture of someone who has lost almost everything, yet has strength and fortitude.

Right up to the pulse pounding, heartbreaking climax, Romanov will grip readers and have them thinking of it long after the last page is reluctantly closed.  The world needs more young adult fiction dealing with such important themes and that leave the reader with hope and strength for their own battles!

Content: I give this book a PG-13 rating.  Some examples of the content are: mention of cigarettes and smoking; references to a woman’s bosom; a man is drunk; mentions of alcohol; some gruesome scenes; a man contemplates suicide.

Rating: I give this book 5 stars!

Genre: Fantasy; Young Adult; Historical Fiction; Christian; Romance; Retelling

A Brilliant Historical Fantasy Novel!--"Fawkes" by Nadine Brandes--Review

Wow, this book deserves an award!  Nadine Brandes does an amazing job weaving fantasy and history in her new young adult book, Fawkes!  It can be enjoyed by guys, girls, and young adult and adult readers alike.  You need this book now!

Fawkes has so many amazing elements and layers to it!  Ms. Brandes did such an incredible job with this book that I could gush about it forever!  I love the concept of the whole story with the magical elements, the historical setting and the faith allegories.  I think lovers of Harry Potter and Narnia would really enjoy this book, as many parts of Fawkes are reminiscent of these classics.

Ms. Brandes describes 17th century London so well and very realistically.  I loved learning more about the gunpowder plot and the battles that were going on between Catholics and Protestants (also known as Keepers and Igniters in this story).  There are great action sequences that will keep your adrenaline pumping into the wee hours of the morning.

The characters are well developed and are sure to become reader favorites.  Thomas, the main character, finds himself caught up in a plot full of intrigue and mystery.  Thomas is looking for confidence, purpose and identity.  Emma, the other main character, is a great role model.  I love the interactions Thomas and Emma have with the White Light.  Emma and Thomas both learn that the plague or one’s skin color doesn’t define who one is.  The story has so many layers to it—religious dissension and persecution, feuds between Catholics and Protestants, religious freedom, race, and Light versus darkness.

There are so many great messages in this incredible read!  Fawkes shows how culture affects so much of a person’s life and beliefs.  We need to have discernment, seek the source and come to our own conclusions.  We need to fight for truth and stand firm in our beliefs.  A lot of people do things in the name of God, but He doesn’t ask for murder, etc.   Instead, He asks for us to respond to His voice.  The plague in Fawkes seems to be reminiscent of sin in our lives and how the Bible talks about us having a heart of stone and that only Christ can ultimately heal our sin and hearts.   My husband is already begging to read this book and I want to give it to my nephew as well.  I highly recommend Fawkes!

Content:  I would give this book a PG-13 rating for some of the graphic descriptions and violence. Some examples of the content are: students drink wine; people drinking in an inn; the word “hell” is used; some graphic descriptions of people who were hung on the gallows or executed; a girl threatens to tell her guardian that a man forced himself upon her; talk of castrating a man; mention of cleavage; a man is drunk; a man and woman slap each other; reference to a concubine and whorehouses.

Rating: I give this book 5 stars!

Genre: Christian fiction; Historical; Fantasy; Young Adult
